4 Tips to Extend Your Electric Bike Battery's Life

Ebike battery care is vitally important. The battery's health has a tremendous impact on performance, for one thing. And for another, typical replacement cost is 70euros or more, so you want your battery to last as long as possible.

This guide will provide you with all the information you need to get started with proper maintenance and ensure that your battery is running at peak performance.

1.Mind Your Charge Level

Almost every e-bike is fitted with lithium-ion batteries, which are best kept topped up to improve their life, at 85%, in fact, completely draining these kinds of batteries all the time can damage them.

Our general advice is to charge your battery up at every opportunity, not letting it drop and stay below 50% too often. This will keep the battery working most efficiently, and the capacity higher for longer, resulting in the longest lasting range.

2.Get a Light Timer

Never leave the battery plugged in all the time or more than 24 hours at a time.

We all have better things to do than to sit and watch a battery charge just so we can pull the plug at 80 to 90 percent, so get yourself a light timer and set it for one to 2-3 hours. Most batteries will hit 80 percent within this time.

3.Let the battery cool before charging

It's often easiest to remember to plug your e-bike in as soon as you finish using it. If you can though, let the battery cool a little first (for around 15 minutes) before sticking it on charge.

Why? Battery systems tend to charge most efficiently when they're not still warm from immediate use. You may not notice a difference in the short term, but longer term this can lead to reduced loss in battery capacity with age.

4.Do Not Store in Extreme Temperatures

If you're storing the bike for a few months, a 40 to 70 percent charge is ideal. Check the battery at the beginning of every month. If the battery drops to 20 percent or lower, give it a booster charge to return to the 40 to 70 percent range.

Storage should also be done in a dry space between 45 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Anything above or below is considered extreme, and not healthy for battery chemistry. This is why it is important not to leave your battery in the car. Even with the ambient temperature being 60 degrees, the inside of your car can exceed these limits in 20 to 30 minutes in direct sunlight. If you can't take it inside with you, lock it back onto the bike. This will keep it secure and cooler than inside the car.
